Many of us Christians spend more time analyzing what is going on in their lives, than praying to God and asking Him to lead them. Let me unpack that statement. Have you ever made a decision and then questioned whether or not God was in it? Then you look to what happens (due to that decision) to judge whether or not you were correct? Ah! What a horrible way to test your decision! Or perhaps, that is the problem right there. It was your decision. You made it thinking that was where God was leading you due to this or that, but you never asked Him outright what you should do. Stop making decisions that way!
Quiet yourself, ask God what you should do, listen, and then quickly obey.
Quiet yourself: This can be done anywhere if you have practiced this skill in quiet before. However, most of us can quiet our selves best when the rest of life is quiet. You may need to set aside 30 minutes or so to prepare yourself. I know that sounds long, but our heads and hearts are so full of information, thoughts, and feelings that they block out what God wants to say because we already have input into the decision from these other sources. So stop, take time to throw down the everything else and get ready to listen to the ONE who knows what’s best.
Ask God what you should do: I know it doesn’t sound like rocket science, but we tend to skip this simple step. The all knowing God wants to lead you. If you are a Christian, you have submitted your life to Him. He is your King. He will direct you on life’s journey.
Listen: This is the crucial step in the whole process. Many of us will take time to stop and pray, but we leave that place or prayer without getting an answer from God. Stop doing that! God will either give you the final answer to the question or guide you in some way. Sometimes you need to deal with a situation or emotion before you can get a final answer from God. Do that. If you are afraid of the answer God MIGHT give you, deal with that first. God is love and He loves you. He will care for you where ever He takes you, so there is no need to fear.
Obey Quickly: Don’t delay in obeying God. If He’s leading you, follow.
“Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what He wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.” Romans 12:2 MSG
No more guessing game decision making. It’s far too risky. It can cost you thousands of dollars. It has caused you to question God (Really, was He even allowed to be involved?). It has caused you to question yourself. We cannot truly live this way! Confusion is not from God. We need to hear God and then follow Him. He’s the only one who knows best.
When you ask God and then follow HIS lead, the questioning is voided. He told you to go this way. He is leading you. No need to look at the situation for clues to whether or not it was right! When bumps in the road come, you can simply deal with them and move forward without questioning God or yourself.
