Many things try to define who we are. From the moment you were born, you were defined in some way. In school, kids feel the need to define people and even categorize people into groups. Then in high school you must decide if you are going to college and your future career while still trying to figure out life. All of these external things have put a label on you.
Take a moment and think through how you would define yourself right now. What labels do you wear? What words come to mind?
This status of being a child of God is foundational to your identity when you are allowing God to define you. Why would you allow God to do that? Why does he get the final say in who you are? Well, he created you. He knew you in your mother’s womb. He deeply loves you and wants a relationship with you. He’s invested in who you are. As a Christ follower, you have taken on a life following God and submitted to his authority in your life. Instead of this being confining, it is actually very freeing. God has a universal identity for all those who are Christ followers. He also has an individual identity for you that we will explore in the future. Today, our exploration is of the universal variety.
God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. Ephesians 1:5
We are adopted into God’s family as His own. What an honor! This perfect God has adopted us as imperfect humans to be a part of his family, part of his kingdom. Because of the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, this is only possible through the death and resurrection of Christ. Without this redemptive work, we would be unworthy to be part of his family. Through salvation, you are now a Child of God.
But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12
See what an incredible quality of love the Father has shown to us that we would [be permitted to] be named and called and counted the children of God! And so we are! 1 John 3:1a AMP
This is the foundation for all the pieces of your identity. When you can accept and live in the truth that you are a child of God, it will transform the way you see yourself and the way you live out your days. The beauty of salvation is that it is not only determines your life after death, but it also helps you here and now! Each day you get the opportunity to walk through life with God.
Your foundation is being God’s Child. From there, he will bring out the person you are inside. This will change the way you hear words about yourself from others. If someone tries to define you in any other way that how God has defined you, you can understand that they do not see the real you. You are who God says you are.
This whole concept was difficult for me to grasp while I was learning about my true identity. I felt the need to perform a certain way or do certain things to be accepted. That’s not how this works!
But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir. Galatians 4:4-7
Is accepting this position as God’s child easy for you? Is there anything standing in the way of you fully embracing your status as his child and heir?
